Hong Kong’s Mark Six lottery will mark its 40th anniversary with a record prize fund of HK$188 Million on February 2. Prize money will be divided among three pools: Triple Trio Jackpot Pool, Quartet & First 4 Merged Pool Pool and the First Division Prize Pool.
US lawmakers wrote to the Nobel committee praising pro-democracy campaigners from Hong Kong as global role models in light of Beijing’s crackdown against dissent. Nine lawmakers representing both parties requested that Jimmy Lai, Chow Hang-tung Lee Cheuk-yan Gwyneth Ho and Joshua Wong should receive this honour; since January these activists have been detained due to peacefully protesting Beijing’s National Security Law.
The ICAS Book Prize for Hong Kong International Development recognizes outstanding research on Hong Kong’s role in international development. The prize aims to encourage scholars and writers to study its development, its contribution to world affairs, and how its role on the global stage might change over time. Researchers who have received Academy Fellowship within the past ten years and published work in peer-reviewed journals can apply.
Over 2 million people participated in a massive street rally in Hong Kong on June 16 to voice their opposition to plans by China to transfer control of Hong Kong back to them in 2047. Organisers stated they expect more rallies like this in coming months; Beijing has increased efforts to suppress dissent by arresting several democracy activists such as 24-year-old Joshua Wong; it has also instituted laws restricting freedom of speech and assembly while campaigners face charges that range from sedition to inciting violence.
Hong Kong’s pig farming industry saw its biggest surge during 1967 riots, according to research conducted by students from Wong Shiu Chi secondary school who won first prize at this year’s Hong Kong Pig Farming Industry Essay Contest sponsored by Federation of Hong Kong Industries and Association of Secondary School Teachers in Hong Kong. Students were assessed on factors including relevance of theme, systematic use of collected materials, objectivity in analysis and citation of bibliography/footnotes; winners received trophies while runners-up received certificates of achievement.
The winners of the 2017-18 Hong Kong Literature Prizes were honored at an awards ceremony held on December 2017 to commemorate donors in memory of George B. Endacott, Lecturer (1946-57) and Senior Lecturer (1957-62) in the Department of History at University of Hong Kong who greatly contributed to its reestablishment as one of the principal teaching and research units within Faculty of Arts during 1950s.
Hong Kong Golf Club will host the eighth event of this season’s elevated Asian Tour series on January 31. The winning player will take home a $2m prize pool.
