In 1996, friends and students established The Professor John D. Young Prize to honour his passion for Hong Kong history and belief that an understanding of local history is integral to undergraduate and postgraduate studies. The Prize provides incentives for students to explore various historical aspects of Hong Kong and understand their relationships as well as promote both its importance in shaping Hong Kong development as well as local culture’s role within society.
Bank of China (Hong Kong) Limited established the BOCHK Science and Technology Innovation Prize in 2022 to recognize outstanding scientific researchers and innovators for their contributions in making Hong Kong an innovative hub, and their use or transformation of research outcomes for community benefit. A Selection Committee comprising professionals from universities, research institutions and companies evaluate candidates before being evaluated by an independent Review Committee and Compliance Oversight Team.
This esteemed award recognizes individuals advancing global civilisation and creating harmonious societies. Previous recipients have included social justice activists fighting for democracy in their home countries as well as community service workers such as establishing non-profit organisations that help homeless adults. The logo for this award, featuring an image depicting a pearl with jade amulet punctures through, signifies how human spirit triumphs even under difficult conditions.
BOCHK Science and Technology Innovation Prize laureates (individuals or teams) will each be eligible to receive a total prize pool of HK$2 Million along with a certificate, in addition to the prestige that comes with winning this prestigious award. Nominations for individual/team laureates must come from Academy Fellows under 55 when nominated, with their research having been published in a peer-reviewed journal prior to submission deadline – such as prospective or retrospective clinical studies, observational or epidemiological studies or basic science studies but meta-analyses or review articles are ineligible.
The prize provides both short- and long-term advantages for prizewinners, including increased international visibility and media coverage, priority enrollment in SHKS events and access to an expansive network of collaborators. Furthermore, shortlisted works may receive financial support while accessing world-class facilities and research expertise is made available for winners.
