What is the HK Prize?

The HK Prize is an international scholarship program that honors high school students for their academic accomplishments and extracurricular involvement, encouraging them to follow their passions and broaden their global perspectives. Sponsored by Bank of China (Hong Kong) Limited, this prize seeks to promote scientific research with social benefits as well as international cooperation and high standards of moral conduct – winners can access Hong Kong’s premier research facilities as well as attend international conferences and seminars related to their field of study besides receiving financial benefits.

Last year, 15 university professors nominated more than 300 individuals for this prestigious prize–which offers a $200,000 award and travel expenses–including founders of nonprofits that shelter homeless individuals, and scientists who invented liquid biopsy technology to more quickly diagnose cancer. Journalists exposed government corruption while politicians pushed for greater democracy within their countries; several have even been arrested due to their activism; Joshua Wong was recently convicted for subversion for protesting Beijing government’s crackdown on freedom and civil society in Hong Kong.

Winners of the HK Prize should expect to garner both media coverage and international exposure for their work, attending an awards ceremony to present it. Attendance at such an event can help enhance professional images while potentially increasing job placement prospects later on. Recognized by various prestigious organizations – such as the United Nations – this prize offers young scientists an invaluable platform to show off their accomplishments.

Prize winners of Hong Kong Prize will not only receive a monetary award, but will also have access to some of Hong Kong’s premier research facilities for six months – this gives them an incredible opportunity to expand their networks and gain deeper insights into Hong Kong culture as they take part in seminars as well as learn about cutting-edge scientific research from local scientists.

The Hongkong Prize recognizes excellence in research conducted by young Fellows of the Academy with the goal of furthering both science and social good. This competition is open to any topic relating to clinical practice that has been published in an authoritative peer-reviewed journal. The winning candidate will receive an engraved gold medal and up to $25,000. Submission deadline for nominations is 1 January 2021 and applicants should apply early due to overwhelming interest in previous years. Organisers have also introduced a special category of the prize that recognizes Hong Kong-based researchers’ outstanding contributions in clinical medicine research. This prize will be distributed gradually throughout 2016 until its announcement at next year’s award ceremony; full details on entry requirements can be found in the Guidelines for Nominations document. We look forward to receiving applications from across the globe! Good luck!
